Hot tips to keep well this winter
With winter upon us, it is important to support our immune system to prevent an unwanted cold. Prevention of an illness is always better than fighting one off, so make sure you follow these “hot tips” to keep well this winter:
-
Stay warm – to avoid getting sick, keep your wrists, ankles, and the back of your neck from being exposed to the cold. Make sure your extremities don't get too cold – especially your fingers and toes.
-
Eat well – have lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, lean meat, fish, legumes, wholegrains, nuts and seeds. Try and include small amounts of yoghurt or other fermented foods like sauerkraut and kefir. They are particularly good for the digestive system and will help increase your body's immunity. It is particularly important in the wintertime to eat right to protect your more vulnerable immune system.
-
Drink plenty of water – although we might not feel as thirsty in winter it is still essential to have at least 2 litres of water/day. Keeping your body hydrated helps to flush out potential toxins. Instead of sipping on a coffee, try some herbal teas (echinacea, licorice and ginger are just some of the herbs which can boost your immune system)
-
Exercise – regular exercising increases blood circulation and immunity. As low as 10 minutes of aerobic activity per day is beneficial for your health.
-
Take a high quality multivitamin – this simple addition to your life can make a big difference by supplying your body with all essential nutrients needed to maintain health and prevent illnesses from occuring.
-
Get plenty of sleep – to make sure your body is fully capable of fighting off illnesses this winter, create a consistent bedtime routine. This includes going to bed at the same time each night so that your body learns to anticipate sleep. You might also consider adding some habits that help you relax at night, such as a warm bath or reading a novel.
-
Get plenty of fresh air – even if you don't feel like being outside on a cold winter's day, it is definitely a great way to boost your immunity with lots of oxygen and sunshine which can help reduce your stress levels at the same time.
-
Avoid junk food, sugar and alcohol – these foods can suppress your immune system and reduce it's ability to fight off infections. Stick to home cooked meals with lots of garlic, onions and ginger.
-
Wash your hands - wash your hands with hot, soapy water every time you use the bathroom and before every meal. It is especially important to carefully wash after spending time in crowded, public spaces. To be sure you're really washing away the potential viruses and bacteria you've come in contact with, use hot water and really scrub your hands for at least 60 seconds.
-
Have some fun! It is important to nurture both your mind and body for total well-being. When we're happy and relaxed, our immune system is working better and we will have an increased sense of well-being.
